Brandy

Over 100 volunteers rallied around Brandy at the 2023 Women Build to frame her new home. It was a huge step to getting Brandy closer to homeownership.

Brandy works as a nursing assistant at Richard Campbell Veterans Nursing Home and is the mother of Nay’shon and Jada. Her previous rental home was difficult for the family to live in as she and her two growing teenagers struggled to share one small bathroom that was barely big enough to stand in. Furthermore, Brandy was paying so much for rent that she couldn’t save money to support her kids and give them a better future.

“I have teenagers now” she explained. “It’s important to get them into a new environment.”

Brandy was familiar with Habitat for many years, having been introduced to it through the local library. She even filled out the application a few times before deciding to finally turn it in.

“I never got the courage up to do all the things that they ask of you to do on the application. I wasn’t motivated enough,” she said. “This time around I was motivated enough, and now I’m here and excited!”

Spurred on by the desire to provide a better and more affordable home for her children, Brandy worked hard to complete her sweat equity hours. Finding the time wasn’t easy for her, but she felt encouraged by helping other homeowners build their homes. She was thrilled to learn that she had been chosen as the 2023 Women Build homeowner.

“I was not expecting to be the Women’s Build” she said, “This is exciting!”

Brandy looks forward to walking into her home, which will be a cozy place she can call her own. She can’t wait to bring her family to a fresh environment.

“It’s a feeling I can’t explain,” Brandy said. “It’s something that you’re going to own, something that’s going to be yours. Something you can pass down to your kids and your kids’ kids!”

Brandy encourages future homeowners to never stop working toward their dream. She’s proud of all the hard work she did to complete the requirements, and hopes others will put the same efforts toward their goals.

“Never give up,” she emphasized. “Reach for any and everything that you dream of.”
